Tibet Tour begins with a scenic trans-Himalayan flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa. Covering the distance of 604km, you’ll fly over the Himalayas while overlooking the aerial view of some of the highest peaks in the world like the Mt. Everest (8848m), Makalu (8485m), Lhotse (8516m), Kanchenjunga (8586m), and Cho Oyu (8201m).
The capital of Tibet Autonomous Region of China, Lhasa is also known as the Forbidden Kingdom. The city inhabited by less than 100,000 residents largely follows Tibetan-Buddhism.
You’ll begin the tour with an insightful visit to historical Potala Palace. Also known as the winter palace, it was formerly inhabited by Dalai Lama before his exile to India. You’ll explore the prayer halls, offices, and monumental sites before heading towards Sera Monastery. Sera Monastery is one of the Great 3 Gelug university monasteries in Tibet. The day ends with a visit to Norbulingka Palace, the summer palace of Dalai Lama.
The final leg of the tour takes you towards Drepung monastery, the largest monastery in Tibet. You’ll further visit Barkhor Street and enter Jokhang Temple. You can witness many pilgrims performing Kora in the area. The tour ends with a visit to Barkhor Market. Barkhor is the oldest market in Lhasa. You can find almost anything here. Day 01: Fly from Kathmandu to Lhasa – Tibet
After early morning breakfast at Kathmandu, you’ll drive to the airport and embark on a trans-Himalayan flight all the way to Lhasa. You’ll cover a distance of almost 604km in about 1.5hr. From the flight, you can catch the beautiful aerial view of the Himalayan mountain range dominating the landscape including the Mt. Everest (8848m). Once over the Himalayas, you’ll encounter the desert-like landscape of Tibetan plateau as far as your eyes can reach. At Lhasa, you’ll be transferred to your hotel.
Day 02: Potala Palace PM: Sera Monastery and Norbulingka
You’ll embark on the full-day sightseeing tour of Lhasa City and visit some of its unique tourist destinations. First, you’ll head towards the historic Potala Palace. Also known as the winter palace, it serves as the large museum that is home to numerous prayer room, living quarters and the former imperial office. Afterwards, you’ll make your way towards Sera Monastery, one of the Great 3 monasteries of Tibet. The day ends with a visit to Norbulingka Palace. Also known as the summer palace, it was used by Dalai Lama during summer. You can explore the palace before heading back to the hotel.
Day 03: Drepung Monastery PM: Jokhang Temple and Barkhor market
After early breakfast at the hotel, you’ll embark on the second-day tour of the city. The tour begins with a visit to Drepung Monastery. A Buddhist shrine which makes one of the three great monasteries in Tibet, Drepung monastery is also the largest among all the Tibetan monasteries. From here, you’ll head towards Jokhang Temple located at the center of Barkhor Street. After visiting the temple, you’ll explore the nearby Barkhor market. If time permits, you can explore the only nunnery in Lhasa and Norbulingka Palace. Overnight in Lhasa
Day 04: Fly back to Kathmandu
Bidding farewell to Lhasa, you’ll embark on a flight back to either Kathmandu. A scenic flight over the pristine Himalayas will bring you back to the historical Kathmandu city. You can catch the final sights of the Potala Palace, desert-like Tibetan plateau, and the Himalayas en route to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, you’ll be escorted to your hotel.
